There are between four and sixteen
principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, with the most important
located primarily in the Ganges Valley of India. The four most sacred places
of Buddhist religion are - Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Lumbini and Kushinagar, of
which three (Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar) are located in India and
Lumbini (the birth place of Lord Buddha) is located in Nepal.
Bodhgaya is famous Buddhist pilgrimage for this is the place where Lord
Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. The Mahabodhi Temple and
the Bodhi tree, under which Lord Buddha gained Nirvana (enlightenment) are
the major attractions of this place. At Sarnath (another Buddhist
Pilgrimage), in the Ganges Valley of India, the Buddha proclaimed the law of
faith. It was here that he taught the key aspects of Buddhism: the four
noble truths, the eightfold path and the middle way philosophy. Kushinagar
is the place where Lord Buddha attained his Panirvana). Other important
Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India are, Shravasti, Sankashaya, Nalanda,
Rajgir, Sariputra and Maudgalyayana, Sanchi, Bharhut, Amaravati, and
Nagarjunakond.In addition, you will also find Buddhist monasteries and
gompas at Leh-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh (Dharamshala), Sikkim and northeast
India.
