Barely
262 kilometers from the national capital New Delhi is the Pink City of India
- Jaipur. Jaipur is a part of the famous Golden Triangle Tourist circuit
that also includes Delhi and Agra. Surrounded by towering hills, surmounted
by magnificent forts and crenellated walls, Jaipur sits on a dry lake bed in
a somewhat arid landscape. This charming city is certainly a place of varied
contrasts and a treat for the eyes. The strong Rajputana flavour tempered by

» Sightseeing : Jaipur is studded with
numerous wonderful monuments, which are just exceptional and speak volumes
of the glorious past.
» Shopping : Jaipur is a shopper's paradise. This is
one of the few places where the shoppers may actually watch the skilled
artisans producing the articles they want to buy. The main markets are along
Jauhari Bazar, Bapu Bazar, Nehru Bazar, Chaura Rasta, Tripolia Bazar and
M.I. Road.
» Eating Out : Apart from the general Rajasthani &
Indian cuisine which you will find almost at every hotel (be it luxury or
budget class), you will also find continental and Chinese cuisines in the

» The City Palace : Places of interest are
mainly located within the walled city. The City Palace complex is the most
important landmark with its numerous outbuildings, courtyards, impressive
gateways and temples.
» Hawa Mahal : Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) adjoins
the outside of the palace wall. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap
Singh, the Hawa Mahal is a remarkable structure which overlooks one of the
main streets and also provides some excellent views of the city.
» Amer Fort : Set in a picturesque location, Amer is
a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture. Built in the 16th
century by Raja Man Singh, it sprawls on the hillside. Built in red
sandstone and white marble, the palace complex has some very interesting
apartments, which are unique in style and architecture. Jai Mandir, Sheesh
Mahal, Sukh Niwas and Ganesh Pole are the prominent areas of interest.
» Jaigarh Fort : Built in 1726, Jaigarh, or the Fort
of Victory, is one of the few military structures of medieval India,
retaining its ancient splendour in places, gardens, reservoirs, granary, an
armoury, as well planned cannon foundry, several temples, a tall tower and a
giant mounted cannon - the Jai Ban, one of the largest in the country are
preserved here. The world's largest cannon on wheels is to be found here.
The fort houses a museum and provides some excellent views of the Amer
Palace.
» Nahargarh Fort : A sentinel to the pink city is
the Nahargarh Fort, situated beyond the hills of Jaigarh. It is the first of
the three forts. Built in 1734, this fort provides some stunning views of
the city.

If
there is time left on your schedule then there are many places around Jaipur
which can be visited. One of them Sanganer which lies at a distance of 16 km
and is known for the exquisite Jain temples. Then comes Bagru 30 km, Samode
40 km away, and Sariska at a distance of 107 km which houses a beautiful
National Park.

Most Ideal Time to
Visit Jaipur |
Situated in the eastren parts of Rajasthan, Jaipur enjoys a moderate
temperature. Summers are from April to July when the maximum temperature
reaches a high of around 45ºC. On the other hand, during winters, the
days are sunny and pleasant and nights are bitterly cold where during nights
the temperature falls as low as 5ºC. Looking at the climatic conditions
here the best time to visit the city is between October & March.

Getting There |
» By Air : Sanganer Airport of Jaipur is 15
km from city. Jaipur is a popular tourist and commercial destination and is
connected by air with both Indian Airlines and Jet Airways. Jagson Airlines,
a new entrant on the circuit, connects the city with Delhi, Jodhpur,
Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Rajkot. Taxis are available at the airport for
transportation. The Jaipur Airport has been recently given the authority of
serving the international flights from several international destinations.
» By Trains : Jaipur is connected by rail to all the
major cities of India. One excellent connection from Delhi is the Shatabdi
Express (4 & a 1/2 hour run). Other connections form Jaipur are from
Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Secunderabad and Lucknow, Kanpur,
Agra, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. The jaipur Rly Station is in the center
of the city and has computerized reservation facility.
» By Road : Jaipur is connected to Delhi by National
Highway 8 and the distance of about 260 km can be easily covered in 4 to 5
hours, depending on the time of day. From Delhi, AC and Deluxe coaches leave
from Bikaner House, Pandara Road. For those coming from Agra the route lies
along National Highway 11 that goes via Fatehpur Sikri, Bharatpur and Dasua.
Road distance from Jaipur to some other important centres in the region are
- Jodhpur (332 km), Udaipur (374 km), Ajmer (131 km), Alwar (142 km),
Bikaner (321 km) and Jaisalmer (654 km). Rajasthan Roadways operates an
hourly service, including some air-conditioned coaches.
