Konark
and Puri, located in the eastern India state of Orissa, are famous all over
the world for their magnificent temples and beaches. Konark and Puri are at
a distance of 35 kms from each other. Konark was built by Narsinhadeva I of
Ganga dynasty in the 13th century AD after his victory over the Mughals and
today is known the world over for the Sun temple.
Puri on the other hand is one of the four holy dhams of Hinduism and the
hallowed seat of Lord Jagannath. Puri is at a distance of 60 kms from state
capital Bhubaneshwar while Konark is at a distance of 65 kms. Both Puri and

Jagannath Temple : The majestic temple of Jagannath draws tourists from
all parts of the world. The 65-meter-high temple structure always makes its
presence felt. The 12th-century temple was built by Chodaganga to
commemorate the shifting of his capital from south to central Orissa. The
temple is surrounded by a 20-foot-high wall within which several smaller
shrines are located. The rest of the temple is composed of a traditional
porch, hall of offerings and pillared hall of dance. The temple, where
rituals and ceremonies are performed strictly according to scriptures is not
open for non-Hindus.
» Gundicha Mandir : Gundicha Mandir is one of the
temples closely related to the festivity of the Rath Yatra of Puri. Legend
has it that God resides in this holy place for seven days during the
festival.
» Sakshi Gopal : Located on the outskirts of Puri,
Sakshi Gopal is the place where a life-size image of child Krishna is being
built. According to ancient scriptures, Lord Krishna came to this place as a
witness to clear out a dispute of two Brahmans. constructed during the 13th
century.
» Chilika Lake : Chilika is Asia's largest
freshwater lake spread over an area of 1100 sq km area. Chilika is home to a
rich variety of aquatic fauna.Dolphins could be spotted in the lake and an
abundance of migratory birds come to the lake in winter. The lake is located
few kilometers away from Puri.
» Konark Sightseeing : Konark is known all over the
world for the Sun temple. The architecture is regarded as one of the best
temple architectures in the world. UNESCO has listed the Sun Temple as a
World Heritage Site. The temple has been built in such a way that it
resembles a colossal chariot with 24 wheels, pulled by seven horses. There
is a three-tiered pyramidal roof having a fine spire. It is interesting to
note that Sun God's chariot represents seven days of the week and 24 hours
of the day. The temple, built in stones has many impressive sculptures. In
fact, every aspect of life has been depicted here. Human love has been
depicted through many magnificent and sensuous images.The temples of Konark
and Puri are finest examples of medieval India's architectural genius.

climate. During Summers the maximum temperature is 38 C and the minimum
temperature is 27.1 C. During winters the maximum temperature rises up to
28.2 C and the minimum temperature is 15.2 C.
Puri experiences a tropical climate with pleasant winters and hot and humid
summers and heavy rainfall. October to March is the best time to visit
Konark and Puri.

» By Air : The airport nearest to Puri and
Konark is Bhubaneshwar at a distance of 60 and 65 kms respectively.
Bhubaneswar is linked by Indian Airlines and Jet Airways flights to Kolkata
(55 min), Delhi (1 hr 55 min), Chennai (1 hr 40 min), Mumbai (3 hr 10 min).
From Bhubaneswar, one can easily opt for either train or bus services that
can be found easily. Taxis and buses are available from the airport to reach
Puri or Konark.
» By Trains : Puri is one major railway station on
the south eastern railways. Puri is connected to the rest of Orissa and
India by railways. Puri is also the nearest railhead from Konark. Taxis and
buses are easily found near the railway station for Konark.
» By Road : Being important tourist destinations of
Orissa, buses operate from most parts of Orissa to Puri and Konark. Bus
services are regularly available from Bhubaneshwar (60 kms).
