One
of the most sacred places for Hindus, Pushkar, is located just 11 kms from
Ajmer. It is considered as important as Benaras or Puri and Hindus believe
that no pilgrimage is complete without a dip in the holy lake of Pushkar.
Pushkar has as many as 400 temples and 52 ghats and the only temple in the
country that is dedicated to Lord Brahma is also found here. While Pushkar

» Sightseeing : Pushkar houses some very
exquisite temples of all sizes along with the one and only temple of Lord
Brahma in the entire world. Another important temple is that of Savitri
(wife of Lord Brahma) on a hilltop. It takes a one-hour trek to reach the
temple, but it has a beautiful view of Pushkar Lake in the morning. Other
important places to visit in Pushkar are numerous ghats that run down the
lake. A visit to these temples and bathing ghats would be an exhilarating
experience.
» Shopping : Pushkar main bazaar is a tangle of
narrow lanes lined with an assortment of interesting small shops. From here
you can get some good quality silver and beaded jewelry, embroidered
fabrics, bed and cushion covers, etc.
» Eating Out : There are a number of reasonably
priced eating-places in Pushkar. Vegetarianism is strictly followed here,
even eggs are not allowed, resulting in a limited range of ingredients, but
the cooks make up for this with imagination. You can even get an egg less
omelet in some places!Buffet meals are popular, with many places offering
all-you -can-eat-meals for Rs 25 to Rs 40. German Bakeries seem to be a rage
here.

» Temples : Pushkar is encircled by hills on
three sides and owns a good number of temples. Brahma temple - the only
temple dedicated to Lord Brahma (the Creator of the Universe) in the
country, is one of the most famous temples here.
» Ghats : The holy city of Pushkar has numerous
ghats running down to the Pushkar lake which is believed to have been
created by Lord Brahma himself. The holy lake of Pushkar has 52 bathing
ghats and pilgrims taking a ritual dip in the lake is a common sight.
» Pushkar Camel Fair : During the Kartik Purnima
(the full moon night in the month of October-November) people from far of
places throng Pushkar to take a holy dip in the holy water of the Pushkar
Lake. A cattle fair is also held here on this occasion, where other animal
like camels and horses are also bought and sold. It is attended by people
from far and wide. This event is also marked with pilgrimage, horse dealing,
camel racing and colorful festivities.

enthusiasm of Pushkar can also be sensed in the nearby areas, which are
equally mesmerizing. These include, Kishangarh, a one-hour journey from
Pushkar, founded by Kishan Singh in the 17th century, famous for its unique
style of miniature paintings which was first produced in the 18th century.
Kuchaman another well-known destination, is famous for its fort. Some of the
exciting places in Kuchaman that you can visit are Meera Mahal and Lok Dev
Temple. Another important point to visit is Ajmer, famous for its annual Urs
Mela and a major city of Rajasthan.

The land of fairs and festivals - Pushkar, experiences extreme
climate. The maximum temperature during the summers can shoot up to 40-45°C
while in the winters it can go below 10°C. Monsoon season is short and
has scanty rainfall. The best season to visit Pushkar is in the winters
(October to March).

» By Air : The nearest airport from Pushkar
is Sanganer airport at Jaipur at a distance of 138 km. This airport is
well-connected with daily flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Bangalore and
Chennai. At the airport you will find taxis and buses to reach Pushkar. You
can also board a train to Ajmer, from where you can take taxis or buses to
Pushkar.
» By Rail : The nearest railway station for Pushkar
is Ajmer, which is on the Broad Gauge and hence connected to all the metro
cities of India. Ajmer is connected to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Ahmedabad,
Udaipur, Abu Road and Jodhpur by regular trains. Two of the best trains of
the Indian Railways, Pink City Express and Shatabdi Express connect Ajmer to
Delhi and Jaipur. Ajmer is also connected to Mumbai by the Aravalli Express.
From Ajmer taxis and buses to Pushkar can be taken.
» By Road : A dense network of bus service operates
from Ajmer to key destinations around. Pushkar is 11 km from main Ajmer bus
stand. Rajasthan Roadways run very comfortable deluxe buses from Jaipur.
There are buses from Jaipur to Ajmer every 15 minutes. Some road distances
from Pushkar are - Jaipur (138 km), Delhi (392 km), Ahmedabad (526 km),
Bikaner (233 km)- Jaisalmer (490 km).
