Shimla

» Annandale : Annandale Hill is Shimla's

» The Hills : Jakhoo Hill is another high point in
Shimla. The place has emerged as a major picnic spot of Shimla for the
splendid views that it offers. Prospect Hill is another favorite walk and
vantage point providing breath taking views. There is a little temple of
Kamna Devi on top of the hill.
» Chadwick Falls : This 67 meter waterfall cascades
into a deep gorge. The Fall is at its best after monsoons. Almost every

» Himachal State Museum : The Museum, which was
opened in 1974, has tried to project the cultural wealth of the state. At
present, Museum has about 9000 objects in its collection. The building with
spacious lawns has collections of pahari-miniatures, stone sculpture, local
handicrafts, textiles and embroidery. The building of Himachal State Museum
is a great piece of colonial architecture.
» The Mall : The Mall, is the main shopping center
of Shimla, another place receiving huge crowds in the evening. Although
there is nothing special about the place, shops of all kinds makes the place
very gorgeous after sunset. Shimla ranks as one of the most popular hill

wonderful destinations nearby. Kufri is 16 kms away from Shimla and is well
known for its ski slopes. Mashobra, 13 kms. away from Shimla, has several
excellent picnic spots. Mashobra offers ideal walks amidst oak and pine
trees. Another interesting destination Naldehra is 23 kms away from Shimla
and is etched with conifers. Naldehra offers a well groomed nine-hole Golf
course; undulating hills and giant Deodars, making it a unique spot for
picnics. Other destinations nearby are Chail, Solan and Kasauli.

Shimla has a moderate climate. In summers Shimla has a maximum
temperature of 28°C and a minimum of 15°C. In winters, Shimla
experiences a maximum temperature of 8°C and a minimum of 0°C or
even low. Winters are cold due to the chilly winds from the upper Himalayas.
Heavy woolens are recommended for this season. Around Christmas, Shimla also
experiences snowfall. Shimla receives an average annual rainfall of 166 cms.
March-May and October-November are the most ideal time to visit Shimla,
which is the peak season.

Getting There ? |
» By Air : Shimla airport is located at
Jubbarhatti, 23 km from the downtown Mall. The airport receives only small
aircrafts (17 to 19 seaters) and provides only basic amenities. Direct
flights are available from Delhi and many other national destinations.
Jagson Airlines operates three flights a week (Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday) connecting Shimla with Delhi and Kullu (one hour from Delhi and 30
min from kullu, subject to fair weather conditions). Additional flights are
also operated during the peak seasons. Hire a taxi at the airport to reach
the city.
» By Rail : The Kalka railway station connects
Shimla with the rest of India. The Kalka -Shimla narrow gauge line is
considered one of India's greatest engineering feats. There is direct
connectivity between Kalka and Delhi. The Shimla Railway Station is just
over a kilometer from the city. Another kilometer further is the inter state
bus terminus (ISBT). You can hire a taxi to reach your destination. The 'toy
train' also chugs up and down amidst scenic mountain ranges from Kalka, the
nearest broad gauge railhead to Shimla and back. The best option are from
Delhi, the Shatabdi Express, the Himalayan Queen Express and the Howrah
Kalka Mail. The 120 seat Shivalik Deluxe Express connects with the Howrah
Kalka Mail. It covers the 97 km distance in 280 min., with only one
technical halt at Barog. The Indian Railways introduces Holiday Special in
seasons.
» By Road : Buses regularly operate between Delhi
and Shimla. Buses from a few other destinations of north India are also
available. Shimla is on NH 22 (Ambala,- Zirakpur-Kalka-Kaurik). The NH 22
connects Shimla to Chandigarh, Mandi and Delhi by all weather road. Shimla
is approximately 370 kms away from Delhi.
