Why Sikkim East ( Rumtek Monastery and
Gangtok) ?
East district is the hub of all administrative activity of Sikkim. At the
heart of this district, Gangtok (5500 ft.), capital of the state, is
situated. It is a fast-developing, charming, laid-back city straddling a
ridge with houses spilling down the hill-side. Enchey Monastery, a Tibetan
Buddhist Lamasery situated on a hill-top above the Gangtok city offers a
panoromic view of the town and surrounding hills. A few kms away from the
city The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, houses rare statues, ritual
objects, Thanka paintings. A visit to the Tashi View Point in early morning
would be most rewarding with its spectacular panoramic view of Great
Khanchendzonga Range. Do Drul Chorten, Directorate of Handicraft and
Handloom, Sikkim Flower Show Complex are the other important places to
visit.
How to Reach ?
» Flights : One can reach the east district of
Sikkim by reaching Gangtok from the Bagdogra airport in West Bengal, which
is connected to the major cities of India. Thereafter one can take a bus or
hire a private vehicle.
» Trains : There are railway stations at New
Jalpaiguri and Siliguri from where one can switch to the roadways and reach
Gangtok.
» Buses : Buses are available for local
transportation.
» Private Vehicles : You can contact us for this, as
we are well established with an extensive number of cars and coaches
(ranging from luxury to budget and between) for the tourists from all over.
When to Visit ?
Mid February to May and mid September to December.
Where to Stay ?
You might not find exceptional category luxury hotels or accommodation
facilities. But the facilities available are goods enough to make your stay
comfortable throughout your journey in the state. Lodges and hotels are
available in reasonable ranges ideally suited for all types of tourist from
all over the world.
What to See ?
» Rumtek Monastery : A 24 kms drive from Gangtok on
the opposite hill is the Dharma Chakra Centre, Rumtek Monastery. This is the
seat of Gyalwa Karmapa Lama, the head of the Kagyupa Order of Tibetan
Buddhisam. Behind the main monastery is the Karma Nalanda Institute of
Buddhist Studies and the building opposite to it is a small hall featuring a
beautiful jewel studded Chorten, which contains the ashes and the bones of
the 16th Gyolwa Karmapa
» Gangtok : Gangtok is the capital city Sikkim, the
second smallest state of India. Famous for its many important monasteries,
and for the picturesque views of the Himalayas, Gangtok is one of the
important hill-station of the country. In Gangtok you can see a smooth blend
of both tradition and modernity. Located at an altitude of 1547 m above sea
level, Gangtok houses some of the important Buddhist religious sites too.
The existence of the peaceful Chortens or Stupas, old monasteries and the
unspoilt natural beauty of Gangtok offers you a truly unique traveling
experience.
» Tsomgo Lake : Tsomgo lake or Changu Lake is
literally known as the ' source of the lake' in Bhutia language. Situated
around 35 kms away from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, this calm lake is
located at an altitude of 12,310 ft on the Gangtok Nathu La highway. The
lake is about 1 km. Long, oval in shape, 15 meters deep and is considered
sacred by the local people. It's cool, placid water smoothly merges with the
scenic beauty around. This placid lake remains frozen during the winter
months up to mid-May.
