» Trekking in Sikkim :Tholung Valley Trek: Tholung
valley in north Sikkim is the home of the ethnic Lepcha people of Sikkim and
is now a protected area. The Lepchas live in small villages amongst the
dense forested slopes high above the Tholung Valley. The Tholung monastery
houses many relics and antics collected from other monasteries for safe
keeping. Many of these relics are displayed on a special day every three
years. The trek up this beautifully forested valley leads to the higher
Alpine valleys where yaks graze below the snow capped mountains of the
Kanchenjunga range.
» Green Lake Trek : Trek to Green Lake and Zemu
Glacier at the base of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Meet the Lachenpas the inhibitants
of Northern Sikkim and trek to East Base Camp of Mt. Kanchenjunga at Green
Lake from the eastern side. Trek through villages, hills and river valleys
along the foothills of the great Kanchenjunga Range, Pristine areas and
villages visited by a very few westerners till today. Newly opened , Little
trekked, area close to the Tibetan border in North Sikkim. Spring/summer
treks are of interest to bird watchers and flowering plants. October-November
is best for clear weather and good mountain views.
What to See ?
» Yumthang Valley : Yumthang is a valley in the high
reaches of Himalayas also known as the valley of flowers. The Yumthang
valley is situated at an altitude of 1180 ft ( 35564 m) with a close
proximity of Tibet. Yumthang is a beautiful destination, covered with
Rhododendron and Primula flowers. It also offers view of a stunning array of
peaks with Pauhunri and Shundu Tsenpa. A number of hot springs are scattered
in the valley providing an unexpected opportunity to feel the warmth of the
water even in freezing temperature. Rich in sulfur these springs are
believed to have miraculous healing power. A tributary of the river Teesta
flows past the valley and there's the town of Lachung, the nearest inhibited
center.
NOTE : Foreigners are allowed to visit the valley only if they procure a
permit from the tourism department of Sikkim.
